Scanxiety Series

Client: Target Ovarian Cancer

Target Ovarian Cancer is the UK’s leading ovarian cancer charity, and the only one operating across all four nations of the UK. Together with the ovarian cancer community, they are transforming the future for everyone in the UK who is living with the disease and thousands more who are yet to be diagnosed.

Alongside their provision of a support line, community events and more, they also produce resources offering expert advice, practical information and emotional support on a wide range of topics - such as our scanxiety series below.

Part 1…

…and Part 2.

We were commissioned by Target Ovarian Cancer to create these two videos for their website, providing clinically correct information in a clear and accessible manner, while still centring the subjective, personal experiences of the three women and telling their stories - and finding the balance between the emotively personal and neutrally objective.

We used co-design throughout, working with our onscreen lived-experience contributors to shape the content and pedagogy (e.g. they determined they preferred learning with an interwoven mix of real life examples and clinical advice) and to ensure the final cuts accurately represented them.

The shoot itself was stripped back in crew to feel more intimate and safe; we prioritised the contributors’ wellbeing and comfort throughout with ample rest breaks, space to be alone, lots of opportunities to feedback, and on-set support from the charity team. Jessi, who interviewed, was able to use her own personal experience of ovarian cancer to connect with the contributors on camera, providing truly authentic results.

The videos have had a strong impact on audiences, with positive feedback in comments on Target Ovarian Cancer’s social medias and online communities. Below are some of the (anonymised) responses they’ve received:

“I can’t tell you how helpful this email is about scanxiety. A very real condition. I don’t post very often. So Thks very much.”

“Thank you for sharing the videos they look great and have been so well put together.”

“It is brilliant! I'm now trying to listen to these tips as I go through another round of chemo with anxiety about scans and telephone calls!”

“Target have recently done 2 videos relating to anxiety around scan / blood results. They've done a wonderful job with some amazing women who are talking about their own experiences. I'm sure we can all relate to the feelings. There are also tips on how to help women during this time. Scanxiety is real, hope this helps some of you.”

“Jessi and Holly were an absolute pleasure to work with. Throughout the creative process they were fantastic collaborators, sharing their knowledge, insight and ideas. They were always willing not only to take on feedback, but to understand our motivations if we did have feedback. Both Jessi and Holly were very generous with their time, ready to jump on a call when needed. Jessi helped us hold a co-creation session with the participants of the video which meant that they had a say in how the videos were directed. This was particularly important given the emotional complexity of a topic such as scanxiety. She expertly and sensitively led the group discussion during the filming, in a way that made everyone feel comfortable and willing to share their experiences and enabled an insightful and honest conversation. Holly was very responsive throughout the editing process and made sure the videos were produced to a remarkably high standard. As a team, they thoroughly understood our aims from the start and most importantly they handled the projects with care and attention.  I hope to work with them again!”
